INTERNET USAGE GUIDELINES
Are you unsure about how much you can do with 200MB? 500MB? or 1GB of data? Here are our Internet Usage Guidelines that can hopefully help you.
A megabyte is 1,048,576 bytes. A byte is a way of measuring digital data. Just as you can measure milk or petrol in litres, distance in metres or kilometers, you can measure digital data in bytes or megabytes. Every English character can be stored in one byte. So a megabyte (MB) is the equivalent of 1,048,576 English characters. Images, video and audio files require lots of bytes to store and transfer.
1024 Bits = 1 KB
1024 KB = 1 MB
1024 MB = 1 GB
Here are a few examples that will hopefully give you a better idea because we know it's a bit difficult to imagine.
SKYPE
You can talk to someone using Skype (software which allows you to talk to people over the internet) for about 3 minutes per megabyte of data.
VIDEO WATCHING
Videos (3-4 minutes) that are of a standard quality are around 5MB to 20MB in file size.*
Watching videos at high quality results in a much clearer picture
A 3 minute video at high quality = 48 MB in file size.
*The amount of data a video takes to watch depends on the quality of the video.
MP3 FILE SIZE
An MP3 (music) file is typically about 1 megabyte per minute of music. So a song which is 3 minutes long is usually about 3 megabytes in size.
3minute/128kbps mp3 = 2.8MB
4minute /128kbps mp3 = 3.75MB
WEB BROWSING
The Google homepage takes approximately 1kb to download, add images for a total of 10kb.
An average Web site takes approximately 5 MB to download.
MSN CHATTING
30 minutes MSN chatting uses approximately 5 MB
WITH 200MB YOU CAN* :-
Spend 1hour MSN Chatting,
30 minutes using Skype,
Watch 5-10 Videos
and Web Browse!
*= calculated on estimates.
